Placement
All four language skills are practiced in every foreign language course - speaking, listening comprehension, reading and writing. Some courses may emphasize one skill over another, but the curriculum is designed to at least touch upon each of the four skills regularly.
Placement in a foreign language course is always best done after consultation with an instructor of the target language. As a starting point, however, the following guidelines may assist students in initial placement.
| Current language experience | WSU Vancouver course |
|---|---|
| No prior language study or one year in high school | 101 |
| 1 - 2 years of high school language study with little emphasis on speaking | 101 |
| 1 - 2 years of high school language study with strong emphasis on all four language skills | 102 |
| 2 - 3 years of high school language study with little emphasis on speaking | 102 |
| 2 - 3 years of high school language study with strong emphasis on all four language skills | 203 or 204 |
Placement above the 203/204 level is permitted only with the permission of the instructor.
